Then she texts Erin.

Kylie: ready for your first lesson?

Erin: maybe tomorrow

FaceTime ignites on Kylie’s phone. Erin in close up, glaring. The room behind her in shambles, clothes and product scattered like the aftermath of a tornado.

“I’m leaving for Europe next week.”

“And you’ll have plenty of time to pack. You asked for my help.”

“Actually, you asked me.”

“You want to make a splash, it has to be tonight.” Kylie peers out her bedroom window where the agent’s cruiser is still at the curb. “Call me Claire.” She putting in a double shift or what?

On screen, Erin tilts her head so Kylie understands the strain this request is putting on her. “Fine. I’ll see you in twenty minutes.” The screen goes dark.

Kylie’s follower count climbs by the thousands. Her video, Losin’ It, has rocketed onto the Living Now page, directly beneath @PurpleLipGloss’s ongoing STD Roulette series, where the woman behind this account cruises Los Angeles bars and clubs trying to initiate sexual encounters with random men and women.

“Shit,” Kylie says. What bad timing. You never want to go up against these. She should’ve checked, made sure the coast was clear. Now the highest she can get is second place.

First loser.

What makes @PurpleLipGloss’ videos interesting is the suspense. She isn’t successful each time she makes the effort, and that uncertainty keeps her audience coming back. Though, you can get a sense of things based on how long the video tops Living Now. If it’s still at number one after a few hours, you know you’re gonna see some skeezy bathroom sex or hot doggystyle in an alleyway.

Everyone suspects @PurpleLipGloss is someone famous. She always wears a nylon over her face down to her mouth, and a tiger-striped eye mask over that, and she’s really careful about doxing herself. Never wears the same outfit twice. And if she is a celebrity, nobody’s ever been able to match her clothing to any active Instagrammer.

There are entire accounts dedicated to identifying her by the various freckles and marks on her body, but those investigations remain inconclusive.

Whoever @PurpleLipGloss is, Kylie ignores her.
